Saturday 02/04/11 : 2nd XI v Mossley 3rd (Home) Lost 0-2
"On Saturday 2 April Instonians 2nd XI played their final match of the season meeting Mossley 3rd XI at UUJ. We took to the pitch with only 10 players but we controlled the game throughout the match putting Mossley under some pressure. The ball remained for the majority of the game in the Mossley half of the pitch. Our midfield provided excellent support to our forwards but we were very unlucky not to score, despite some fantastic attempts from Gillian, Rachel and Caroline. On the few occasions Mossley were able to launch an attack on our goals they were met with a strong defence who cleared the ball back down the field. In the first half they managed to grasp an opportunity and got past our defence to score their first goal which slipped past our keeper’s feet. Half time score 1-0 to Mossley.
At the start of our second half we remained positive and determined to pull back the score line and work towards a win. Again we dominated play and remained within the opposition half. The second half become somewhat frustrating for our players as the Mossley players seemed determined to win the ball back at any cost resulting in several fouls in quick succession. They used this to their advantage and struck a fortunate goal which was deflected in from Rachel’s pads, despite an earlier save. The ball was returned back into the Mossley half and our girls returned pressure to their goals. We were so unlucky not to hit the target. Final score 2-0 to Mossley. The final score in no way reflects our performance as we maintained control and pressure throughout. A very disappointing result for a well motivated team.
Our team have grown from strength to strength this season and we have been desperately unlucky in some matches not to see this reflected in our scores. This will give us some clear focus of what we need to achieve for next season and hopefully get some well deserved points.” Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 18/03/11 : 2nd XI v QUB 3rd (Home) Lost 0-2
"On Friday 18 March Instonians 2nd IX met Queen’s University 3rd team at our home pitch at Shawsbridge. We started the game with strong determination to pull some points back and maintained this drive through the rest of the game. We played well as a team and showed how much we have grown in our positions with some superb passes. QUB found it hard to dominate the game and each time they made a break for goals our defence quickly cleared the ball away to safety. Shirley continued to push the ball back into their territory with some lovely clearances up the pitch to Erika on the right wing. Erika and Caroline had some excellent chances to attack the QUB goals but unfortunately did not produce a goal for us. Queen’s were able to score a goal in the first half but we were not despondent. Result at half time 1-0 to Queen’s.
In the second half the QUB girls tried to apply more pressure and gained several short corners. Our defence remained strong and they were unable to score despite the continued attack. Ali, who was playing in goals, made some outstanding saves and controlled play in the circle. In the dying seconds Queen’s managed to gain a second goal leaving the final score at 2-0 to Queen’s University.
This was an enjoyable game and a fantastic effort from our second team. I am delighted with the performance and how the team has improved over the season to get to the level we are at. We have one game remaining before the season is complete. I hope that this will provide a strong foundation for us to build on for next season." Match Comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 26/02/11 : 2nd XI v Ballynahinch 2nd (Home) Lost 0-3
"After a very busy and difficult week, I was delighted that the match against Ballynahinch went ahead. We played in Jordanstown at 2.30pm with a team of 10 girls, 3 "old hand" - Chloe and Jane Hart up front and Patricia Beirne defending with Kathy and Ann. It was felt from the initial touch of the ball that despite being a player down we were the much stonger team, and for the first 15 minutes we played really well keeping the ball up in Ballynahinch's defending goals. Unfortunately, shortly after this the opposition got their first goal and we let it annoy us too much. We did play stong for the remainder of the game, but no passes or short corners proved accurate enough to count towards the score sheet. Final score 0-3 to Ballynahinch." Saturday 19/02/11 : 2nd XI v Greenisland 4th (Away) Lost 0-3 PLATE MATCH
"On Saturday 19th February, Instonians 2nds played Greenisland 4ths in the Minor Plate at Belfast High School. I think there were mixed feelings before the starting whistle for a number of reasons. We were playing on gravel, for only the second time all season - which rarely works in our favour, and the opposition were a league above us. However, from the whistle, it was clear that we were no weaker in skills or fitness to the other team.
We had a strong defence at the back with regulars Shirley and Anne, plus the help of Nikki and Claire Aiken, who worked hard to get the ball away on the majority of occasions that it appeared in our defending circle. It was good to see the return of Erika up front, who had a number of opportunities to go through with the ball and at least one chance at scoring a goal. Unfortunately, we did not manage to get any in the back of the net this time round. The final result saw us eliminated from the competition as Greenisland advanced to the next round on as score of 0-3. The seconds team is coming on strong and there is a noticeable difference in play from 6 months ago. Let's enjoy the last few matches and gain a few points at the end of the season. I dont think we'll make it into Junior 8 this year." Match comments by Valerie McCracken
Saturday 05/02/11 : 2nd XI v North Down 5th (Away) Drew 1-1
"On Saturday 5th February, Instonians 2nd XI met North Down 5ths at Comber Leisure Centre. We faced a very different team to the team we played two weeks ago and beat 8-3. From the whistle North Down were determined not to have a repeat performance and moved the ball swiftly up into our half. We fought back straight away returning the ball to their half, which quickly became the pattern of the whole game - neither team dominating play. North Down were able to gain a single goal in the first half. Half time score 1-0.
We restarted the match with a determination to turn the game around. We made a few changes within the team and settled down to demonstrate some excellent passing down the left and into the centre. This culminating in a goal to equalise the scoreline again. We went on to have several further attempts at goal and narrowly missed target on a number of occasions but the score remained unchanged. North Down gained 2 short corners in quick succession as a result of silly mistakes in our own circle but fortunately they were unable to score. In the closing minutes of the game we secured a short corner which gave us the potential of taking the match. The pass narrowly missed target and we lost our opportunity.
Both defences were strong, turning mistakes around quickly, clearing the ball away from the goal area and send it back up the field. Kathy played an outstanding game in goals, taking control of the circle and making some fantastic saves. Anne’s performance kept the left side strong and had some excellent clearances to set up the opportunities for play to return into the opposition half.
Saturday 29/01/11 : 2nd XI v Derg Valley 2nd (Home) Lost 0-2
"On Saturday 29th January, Instonians 2nd XI had an early start for the match against Derg Valley 2nds at Lough Moss Leisure Centre. This was the second time we met the team from Castlederg this season so we already knew they were strong contenders. This did not put our girls off and we went out to fight for the points from the initial whistle.
Derg Valley scored early in the first half which only seemed to make our forward line more determined producing some excellent shots at goal, from Caroline and Gillian, in a bid to equalise. Unfortunately Derg Valley's goalkeeper was just too quick and this was not to be.
Coach, Haydn, provided some encouraging words during the half time break and made a few alterations on the pitch. Our defenders were kept very busy in the second half with Shirley, Nikki & Anne passing well at the back to quickly clear the ball from the circle. Derg Valley managed to get a break away to score their second and final goal of the match and as Instonians ran out of time to pull back some goals of their own the final scoreline remained at 0-2 with this weekend's points going to Derg Valley." Friday 14/01/11 : 2nd XI v North Down 5th (Home) Won 8-3
"On Friday evening Instonians 2nd XI played North Down 5ths at UUJ. From the whistle, we were determined to make an impact and gain some valuable points. Our midfield players initially made a strong push forward towards the opposition goal and a deflection by Gillian allowed Rachel to gain our first goal. North Down came straight back and pushed up to our circle and slotted a goal into the net. Not to be beaten we took up the challenge again and returned the ball back to North Down’s half of the pitch, keeping relentless pressure on their defence. Our centre midfield had an excellent run through the opposition defence passing to Gillian who scored. The attack continued with goals scored in quick succession by Caroline and Gillian. As half time approached Carole gained a further goal from the top of the circle straight into the back of the net to finish the first half with an impressive scoreline of 5-1.
In the second half we continued our attack and successfully gained an additional 3 goals. Carole scored the first of these from a pass into the circle following a long corner. The second resulted from a short corner which Caroline placed neatly into the goal. North Down not wanting to give up easily, took advantage of a couple of passes where our ball did not meet it’s intended target and gained two goals in rapid succession. We pulled ourselves together and re-took control of the game to gain our 8th goal scored by Claire. Our defence held back any attempts on goal from the North Down side for the remainder of the match - clearing the ball well away. Well done to Shirley, Kathy and newcomer Jolene. Final result 8-3 to Instonians.
A huge well done to the team who worked superbly together. This result gave us a massive boost to team confidence. A further big impact on the result was our new goalie Rachel who had a cracking 4 saves in her debut game." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 08/01/11 : 2nd XI v NI Civil Service 3rd (Away) Lost 0-5
"On Saturday 8th January, Instonians 2nds braved the elements and played NICS 3rds at the new Playball pitches at Stormont. We had a strong, full team plus one substitute. This made a real difference to play. We started off strong, in the first half, but unfortunately no goals were scored by ourselves. Caroline played excellent as centre forward and Carole made some amazing saves in goals. The final score was 0-5 to Civil Service but everyone played really well. There was a marked improvement throughout the match compared to last time we played Civil Service and as a team we played better than we have most of the season. Lets hope this is a sign of things to come and we'll climb the league table sometime soon." Match comments by Valerie McCracken
Saturday 20/11/10 : 2nd XI v Ballynahinch 2nd (Away) Drew 0-0
“On Saturday 20th November Instonians 2nd IX travelled to Langley Road to play Ballynahinch 2nds in a late starting match. From the off, Instonians put the pressure on Ballynahinch. We kept possession in their half for the first 15 minutes, keeping relentless pressure on their defence. Unfortunately we were unable to gain a goal at this stage despite all our efforts. Ballynahinch took advantage of any opportunities they were given to get the ball back in the direction of our goal but our defence stood strong and warded off the attacks clearing the ball away successfully. Shirley, Jane and Anne had some fantastic clear runs up the pitch taking the ball back into the Ballynahinch territory. The mid-field took every chance to get the ball back into the circle and aim for goal but the result at half time remained 0-0.
In the second half we restarted with only 10 players and Ballynahinch took full advantage of our reduction in numbers. They obtained several short corners in quick succession but were unable to finish these to take the lead. One opportunity of our own saw Rachel and Carole get a clear run up the pitch with Erika taking the ball into the circle for a shot at goal, narrowly missing target. We applied the pressure further and kept the ball in their 25 for the remainder of the match.
We were disappointed not to have achieved a goal this time but a brilliant team effort with our 2nd XI now gelling well finally put a point on the scoreboard. As a team we poved a force to be reckoned with today. Final result 0-0.” Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 12/11/10 : 2nd XI v Malone 2nd (Home) Lost 0-2
"On Friday 12th November, Instonians 2 played Malone 2 at our home pitch at Shawsbridge. Instonians got off to a bad start and throughout the game seemed a little distracted. We were not fully on the ball nor supporting each other. Unfortunately, the first half saw Malone score a goal from a short corner. By the break the score was 1-0 to Malone, with a second goal being disallowed for being too high and dangerous - narrowly missing one of our player's head. Instonians returned fighting for the ball in the second half, with a marked improvement on skill, and getting a few shots at goal. However, it wasnt to be this weekend again and Malone scored a second time - leaving the final score 0-2 to the opposition. Julie Anne and Laura played excellent in defence with newcomer Caroline playing particularly well in midfield. Keep up the good work girls, the season is far from over yet!" Saturday 06/11/10 : 2nd XI v Coleraine 3rd (Away) Lost 0-6 CUP MATCH
"On Saturday 6th November, Instonians 2nd XI travelled to
Unfortunately, we did not earn any goals ourselves in the match. There was definitely a marked improvement in everyone’s performance. In particular 1-2 passing between Carole and Julie Anne. We did well to keep going considering the downpour we endured for most of the game. Instonians 2nds are coming on well and the results of practising and playing together are starting to come to fruition. Hopefully, the rest of the season will start to work in our favour and we will obtain some much needed points." Match comments by Valerie McCracken
Saturday 23/10/10 : 2nd XI v Derg Valley 2nd (Away) Lost 0-8
"Saturday 23 October, Instonians 2nd XI team travelled to Castlederg to play Derg Valley 2nds. Another disappointing match for us, perhaps compounded with the travel and only 10 players available to play. The opposition took full advantage of our reduced team and gained 4 goals in quick succession within the first 10 minutes. We settled into playing as a team and fought back managing to stop any further goals being won so quickly. At half time the score was 0-5 to Derg Valley. We pushed forward in the second half and had two great chances to score, winning 2 short corners. We were disappointed not to gain a goal on either occasion. The second half resulted in a further 3 goals being won by Derg Valley. Some of our team felt we were equal in skill to the opposition. As a new team not always having the same players available and still developing we have much room for improvement. We need to be confident in our approach, our defending, winning the tackles and must take full advantage of all opportunities that come our way. The final result was 0-8 to Derg Valley.” match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 15/10/10 : 2nd XI v Mossley 3rd (Away) Lost 0-7
"We lost our match against Mossley this weekend, Friday 15th October at UU Jordanstown. Perhaps a very frustrating match for some of us. As a team, we all need to be confident in what we do. We must learn to call for the ball and stick to the basics throughout match play. I don't think the opposition team were any stronger than our own team, but silly mistakes on the pitch cost us yet another 3 points." match comments by Valerie McCracken
Friday 08/10/10 : 2nd XI v NI Civil Service 3rd (Home) Lost 0-7
"A very disappointing result for Instonians 2nds this weekend against NI Civil Service 3rds. Although half the team were playing their first match in quite some time and a number of our more regular players were missing, we still fought hard for the ball through the entire duration of the match. NICS scored 3 goals in the first fifteen minutes but this only seemed to force us to work even harder to prevent anymore goals before the break. Erika made some amazing saves on her debut in goals. Well done, Erika! NICS were a much stronger side overall but we did get a few runs up the pitch and a few shots at goal ourselves. Unfortunately these were not accurate enough to count towards the final scoreline. Well played to all the 2nds ladies on Friday night. Let's turn it around next weekend and glean the 3 points up for grabs! Final result 0-7 to NI Civil Service." match comments by Valerie McCracken
Friday 01/10/10 : 2nd XI v QUB 3rd (Away) Lost 0-4
"On Friday 1st October Instonians 2nd XI played QUB 3rd XI at The Dub, Belfast. It was a tough match with QUB scoring three goals in the first half of the game. We pulled back in the second half with Sharon seizing a fantastic run at the opposition goal but unfortunately no goal resulted this time. Our new team are gelling well with some excellent passing. The final score was 0-4 to QUB." match comments by Carol Maslowski
Saturday 25/09/10 : 2nd XI v UUJ Elks 4th (Away) Lost 0-4
"On Saturday, 25th September, Instonians 2nd XI travelled to Mallusk for the first league game of the season against UUJ Elks. It was good to see some of the familiar faces back again to play and even more so to see some new faces on the field. The defence were solid with some great passes up the pitch and Jenni making some excellent saves in goal. A great effort from all the girls. We have an excellent team this year with lots of potential. Unfortunately on this ocassion the final score was 0-4 to UUJ Elks." Match comments by Valerie McCracken
