Grosvenor 5th (Away)

Saturday 21/03/09 : 1st XI v Grosvenor 5th (Away)  Drew 1-1

"On Saturday 21st March Instonians 2nds played Grosvenor 5ths at CIYMS. The weather was wonderful & both teams were in good spirits. Both teams played well. Grosvenor didn't have many chances for a shot at goal but the one chance they did have was saved convincingly by goalie Valerie. Instonians had many good chances & Chloe scored the first goal of the match. From then on Instonians were very strong & didn't give Grosvenor a break. Time was running out. Grosvenor then got a chance. A penalty corner as the whistle blew for the end of the game. Grosvenor's full team came up & our defense faced them ready to put up one last fight. The defense did well but another penalty corner was given. Grosvenor took an excellent shot at goal & scored making the final score of the game 1-1."     match comments by Lynne Emmerson

Randalstown 5th (Away)

Friday 06/03/09 : 1st XI v Randalstown 5th (Away)  Lost 0-10

"A mild evening compared to recent nights and the score reflected the mild temperatures!  The game got off to a quick start with Randalstown scoring their first goal within the first couple of minutes. Instonians did some good passes when they had the ball on the field but unfortunately were not strong enough to get any into the goals. When Randalstown got the ball they were able to do strong passes into the goals. There were a number of short corners but we did well to prevent any of them converting to goals. Emily seemed to be playing particularly well, although everyone was putting in a lot of effort! We may have lost by a lot but it was still a fun game!" match comments by Rachel Riley

PSNI 3rd (Home)

Friday 27/02/09 : 2nd XI v PSNI 3rd  Won 2-0

" 'That is the best match I have seen you play in a long time!' stated Leslie who was umpiring on Friday 27th Feb for the 2nd XI's game against PSNI.  We started off strong and stayed that way throughout the game.  Communication was excellent with everyone talking and supporting each other.  Defense was solid and PSNI only had one real shot at goals which Shirley was there to save as our goalie.  Excellent hit outs from Nikki and strong support from the rest of the defense meant the rest of the players could concentrate on attacking, and attack they did.

A high percentage of the time was spent in the opposition's half giving their defense a really hard time.  Chloe played a "blinder" with excellent touches to the ball leading to a goal in the first half.  In the second half we kept up the battle with many shots at goals.  PSNI defense were under so much pressure from us that an own goal was scored, putting us ahead with a 2-0 lead.  Overall it was a great game to play as we worked hard as a team and were rewarded for our efforts with a win! Final score 2:0 with Chloe scoring both goals."

Dromore 6th (Home)

Friday 14/02/09 : 2nd XI v Dromore 6th  Lost 1-6

"The snow melted to allow Instonian 2nds to play a game against Dromore.  We got off to a strong start by scoring our first (and only goal for the game) within the first 10 minutes.  But we were unable to keep up this standard and unfortunately Instonians were overpowered and lost by a number of goals.  We had a relatively inexperienced team, and a goalie kit that limited blood to the goalie's brain, so considering this we did fairly well! Goal scorer was 'the other Rachel'."  match comments by Rachel Riley

Saturday 24/01/09 : 2nd XI v Priorians 3rd  Conceded by us

This was originally scheduled as Instonians home match but since the previous fixture with Priorians was scratched by us the home advantage was forfeited for the return match. This match has also had to be scratched due to not enough players being willing or able to make the trip to Londonderry. So, since there was no match there is no match report

Queens 3rd (Away)

Saturday 17/01/09 : 2nd XI v Queens 3rd  Lost 0-4

"A few words to describe the game- cold, wet, windy.  Actually, looking at the weather report from Saturday we were playing hockey in winds averaging 35 miles per hour and gusts of up to 50 miles per hour (which apparently is classed as a strong gale!).  It is likely to have been these gusts which resulted in the goals shifting away from the back line a number of times during the game.  The rain did seem to ease for the game (or maybe we stopped noticing), however it did remain steady, and due to the wind speed it did at times feel like hail was being thrown at us from the sidelines.  Regardless of the extreme weather conditions and gale force winds, Instonians played a good game.  Emily did well in the goals for the first half of the game, only letting in 3 goals out of the many that were hurtled towards her.  The majority of the first half was played at the defence end, with about 4 short corners.  We were able to keep the ball out of the goals during short corners but seemed to struggle more during the game.  Queens’ strong defence made it difficult for us to get the ball past mid field.  Emily did a quick change of position with Kathy at half time, and we seemed to be able to keep the ball closer to midfield for the second half, with a few hits up in the circle, unfortunately no goals to be taken though.  Although it was a loss for Instonians, we seemed to be making good use of players in all positions and hitting the ball around the field more, and it did leave us (or at least me!) with a good sense of satisfaction that we had lasted the distance in such terrible weather!"   match comments by Rachel Riley

Lisnagarvey 7th (Away)

Saturday 10/01/09 : 2nd XI v Lisnagarvey 7th  Won 2-0

"The seconds won 2-0 against Lisnagarvey. Scorers were Naomi Murphy and Emily Thompson. Good match. Some new players playing. Emma Brown was strong at the back. Emily Thompson was creating chances in  midfield."  match comments by Jenni Campbell

"On Sat 10th January Instonians 2nds played Lisnagarvey 7ths at Lisnagarvey's home ground.  It took our team a while to get warmed up as weather conditions were windy and very cold.  A few minutes into the game we started to work well as a team and both attack and defense were in good form. Any shots at goal from Lisnagarvey were watched and saved calmly by Nikki.  Two goals were scored by Instonians, one by Naomi and one by Emily.  One goal was a result of a penalty corner.  Instonians went on to hold a 2 goal lead and won the game 2-0.  It reflected our good performance and was well deserved."  match comments by Lynne Emerson

Dromore 6th (Home) CUP MATCH

Friday 05/12/08 : 2nd XI v Dromore 6th XI  Won 3-2  (CUP MATCH)

"Instonian's dominated up front from the very start of this match with good dribbling and passing shots from all players. We marked very well and soon got our just desserts with the scoring of our first goal. In quick reply Dromore made their way up the pitch, sent a wild shot past our goal mouth and were extremely fortunate that it happened to ricochet off one of their player's sticks, over the head of Nicky, our goal keeper, and into the back of the net. Our second goal came shortly afterwards and came from our forwards placing enormous pressure on the Dromore backs and a very determined goalkeeper. In the second half Dromore evened up the scores again as a result of a short corner that slipped past the goal line. Instonians however, were not to be defeated and the final goal of the match was ours. Final result a 3-2 win for Instonians. Goal scorers: Jenni C, Leanne & Naomi."   match comments by Etain Tansey

Grosvenor 5th (Home)

Saturday 22/11/08 : 2nd XI v Grosvenor 5th  Drew 1-1

"There was a definite autumnal feel to Saturday's game down at Newforge. The chilly weather resulted in many people playing the whole game in gloves or hats and minutes spent searching for the ball amongst piles of brown leaves which had been blown to the edge of the field. The game was very close with Instonians spending most of their time at the attacking end of the field. The first goal was scored by Instonians. The Grosvenor defence was strong so there seemed to be a lot of messy play in the circle as their players tried desperately to get the ball out. Eventually Emily managed to sneak the ball in past the goalie. In less then a minute the second goal of the game was scored by Grosvenor with one of their players virtually running the length of the field to get the ball past Rachel and Nicky and sliding it in down the edge of the goal net. Although the second half of the game was again in our goal scoring half, we were unable to score again. Their goalie definitely had a lot of work to do. Passing between players is definitely getting more accurate. This which meant we were able to work the field better and kept the opposition on their toes. Overall it was a well played game." match comments by Rachel Riley

Randalstown 5th (Home)

Friday 14/11/08 : 2nd XI v Randalstown 5th  Lost 0-2

"After a delay to match start to allow the opposing players to warm up, it did not take long to see that Randalstown were a very organised, rehearsed team, well used to playing with each other. They started as they meant to go on and were on top of us from the outset. They made it very difficult for Instonians to play their regular game and initially all play was up our end of the pitch. Faced with such strong opponents Instonians played well with some nice passing movements through centre field. We probably needed to mark up better for these movements to get to the Randalstown goals. Unfortunately most of the activity took place at our goals with Nikki performing well. Nevertheless, the opposition found our net twice. Overall a lot of positives to be taken out of this experience and the scoreline reflects the determination of our crew. Score: Instonians 0:2  Randalstown."  match comments by Etain Taney

"It was a rough match against Randalstown (my old team). Our girls were unfortunate to be beaten 2-0. Laura Postlewaite got hit in the face and umpire Leslie smyth had some dealings with one of the Randalstown players. On the whole it was quite an even match but we had lots of missed opportunities up front. The defence played well. Randalstown also had a few opportunities up front but our defence held their ground. Laura P being a stronghold in the defence."  match comments by Jenni Campbell

PSNI 3rd (Away)

Saturday 08/11/08 : 2nd XI v PSNI 3rd  Lost 1-2
"Although this game resulted in a 2-1 defeat, it was a close and well played match by Instonians. The first half of the game seemed to be played mostly in the midfield, with a few shots at the goals by both teams. Unfortunately for Instonians one of the opposition's balls snuck in to the goals giving PSNI the first goal of the game. In the second half of the game Instonians was definitely dominant with great passes between players, good use of the whole field and much better communication between players. The forwards did a great job of keeping PSNI’s defence on their toes with skillful passes between each other in the circle. A quick pass by Emily to Jenni resulted in Instonians only goal of the match. This was shortly followed by a goal from PSNI when they hit the ball in from the side line and managed to sneak it past all of our players and into the goal in very speedy fashion! It seemed that Instonians were going to be able to equalise with the majority of the last quarter played up front. With a couple of short corners and a number of free hits we were able to keep the ball at the end we wanted it but unfortunately PSNI’s defence was too strong and we were unable to score another goal. It was a well played game throughout. Kathy did a great job again as goalie and it is good to see how much some of our skills have improved from last season."   match comments by Rachel Riley

Dromore 6th (Away)

Saturday 01/11/08 : 2nd XI v Dromore 6th  Won 5-0

"Instonians took to the pitch and began strong, scoring a goal within minutes. It was eveident that Thursday night training with Aaron is paying off. Two more goals followed from textbook short corners. The second half saw two additional goals from Instonians. The match was not all one-sided however, goalie Leanne being tested at times but rising to the challenge on each occasion. The first match with Lynne as team captain was a resounding success. Final score Instonians 5: Dromore 0. Goal scorers: Jenni (3), Emily (1), Etain (1)."   match comments by Etain Tansey

"I umpired this match and there were even subs for the game! All gave 110%. Many had not played since February and the rest of the team were new. So everyone did extremely well against a team that had been coached and training together for some time. Point to note - not all go for the dame ball - call to player - this will come with match play and also knowing the name of the person beside you."  match comments by Leslie Smyth
