04/02/2012 : 2nd XI v Greenisland (Away) Won (conceded by opposition) Minor Plate
12/11/2011 : 2nd XI v Ards 5th (Away) Lost (forced to concede as per union rules due to 1st XI failure to field team for their cup match)
Saturday 25/02/12 : 2nd XI v South Antrim (Home) Lost 1-2 MINOR PLATE
Saturday 18/02/12 : 2nd XI v Ballymena 4th (Home) Lost 0-5
A team talk at half time saw us pull together in the second half resulting in some lovely play as we found our positions. Sandra and Caitlin worked well together with support from new recruit Chloe. Our positioning was better and less balls were getting through the large spaces, preventing Ballymena from retaking control of play. We had 2 short corners and Sandra was unlucky not to score. Rachel also narrowly missed one deflection. One further goal was scored in the second half taking the final score to 5-0 to Ballymena.
A very disappointing result. The score in no way reflected our play. This was also commented on by the opposing umpire. It has taken all season to establish ourselves as a team and we have gelled well together. I am hopeful that if we continue to develop next season as we have for this season then we will have a good chance of winning some games next year." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 21/01/12 : 2nd XI v Ards 5th ("Home") Lost 0-4
"On Saturday 21st January, Instonians 2nd XI travelled to Newtownards to play Ards 5th XI for our home match. Ards were given the home advantage as per union rules as we were forced to concede our away match with them due to our 1st XI conceding their match that week. The match started well. We had first passback and took the ball swiftly up the field. Gillian sent a shot towards goal, narrowly missing target. Not to be deflated we regained control from the hit out and Gillian gave the ball an almighty hit which deflected off their goalkeeper into the back of the next. The goal was awarded and we were delighted with such a positive start. Some confusion arose and the goal was then disallowed as the umpire had not seen the ball deflect off the goalie. Extremely disappointing. Ards took advantage and quickly moved up to our circle. Abby moved out of the goal to kick the ball away and misjudged the shot which allowed the ball to slip under her foot into the goal. The second goal, minutes later, was no better and slipped over the line in slow motion. We tried to regain control and much of the play returned to our advantage with some around their goal mouth. We were too hesitant to give the ball a finishing belt at goals and lost the opportunity. Score at half-time 2-0 to Ards
The second half started with a change around in our team as Shirley had a hand injury from the first half. Sandra stepped up to the role and had some superb clearances up the field. Gillian did well to use the space but each time she tried to get through the Ards defence she was swiftly closed down. Carole picked up a lovely pass from Gillian and misjudged the turnaround for goal and the ball went off the back line. We struggled to play advantage as the umpire continually stopped play. Shirley returned to the pitch and both Sandra and Ann made some lovely progress up the pitch to attack. Blathnaid did very well in defence too. Ards managed to get another 2 goals before the final whistle. Final score 4-0 to Ards.
A very disappointing match and the score really did not reflect how well we played. We played well as a team with lovely play between the backs, through midfield and up to the forwards. We still need to utilise the space created. The middle of the pitch was often wide open. Well done to the new girls Jenny, Emer and Blathnaid who played very well." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 14/01/12 : 2nd XI v Larne 3rd (Away) Lost 1-4
"On Saturday 14th January Instonians 2nd XI travelled to Larne High school to meet Larne 3rd XI for our return match. We had a great turn out and it was good to see Ann Duckett return as left back. It took us a while to settle into the game and Larne took full advantage. They scored 2 goals in quick succession, the second one from a penalty corner and an aerial shot leaving Abby little chance of stopping it. As the game progressed we relaxed, settled and began to find our positions. There was lovely play between Elaine, Gillian and Jemma towards the end of the first half. Larne continued their attack and our backs fought hard to clear the ball away. We were hesitant at times going into tackles and allowed the opposition several opportunities resulting in a further goal. Score at half time 3-0 to Larne.
We started the second half with the passback. Gillian and Elaine took the attack to the Larne circle with some excellent 1-2 passing. Backed-up by Jemma, Gillian hit the ball cleanly into the corner of the net to pull back a goal. As a team we played well in the second half and maintained a strong attack. We had several more attempts on goal with Gillian unlucky not to score on one attempt when the ball hit the post and deflected out of play. Larne were successful in getting the ball back up to our defence and we played well to clear it several times. They gained several short corners and we prevented these from turning into further goals. Their final goal came as a deflection off Carole’s stick into our goal. Extremely frustrating. Final score 4-1 to Larne
An extremely enjoyable game for us against the team at the top of our league. Some of their players seemed more skilled than the level we normally play at. We have three league games and one plate match remaining before the season ends. The team have done really well, particularly the new players who are new to hockey. I am delighted with the support they have given and the commitment many have shown for all of our matches. If we can continue to develop the new players and allow them to establish their positions it will make us stronger for next season." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 06/01/12 : 2nd XI v South Antrim (Home) Lost 0-5
"On Friday 6th January Instonians 2nd XI played South Antrim at home (Shawsbridge). We expected a tough game as the first match back after the Christmas cake, pies & turkey. The rain didn't help but the team was looking forward to getting back into action. South Antrim are a new club but with a well established team. They should be playing in a higher league as their skills level is well above their current league position. Our back line held strong when faced with a lot of pressure from the start. Sandra & Lynn were up to the challenge despite some rough play. The opposition scored first from a well rehearsed penalty corner. Emily and Elaine linked up nicely to create some great attacks to win us back a penalty corner but we were unlucky not to score. At half-time we were down 3 goals but picked ourselves up for the 2nd half.
The rain was heavier when play resumed making it hard to see the ball at times. Some great saves from our goalie, Nicola, kept South Antrim at bay for a period of time. Unfortunately they managed to fit in a couple of easy goals towards the end of the game, followed by over the top celebrations, leaving the final result 5-nil to South Antrim. All in all it was a great team effort and we showed much improvement from the last time we played them when we lost 7-nil. We only gave away one penalty corner in the whole match showing how well the back line cleared the ball and kept it out of the circle. Since we had not played for over a month the team played well together but at times our fitness let us down.
Thanks also to Lindsey, our umpire, who had to put up with comments from the sidelines. It was a tough game to umpire in the rain, with some tough calls and she put in an awesome performance." Match comments by Rachel Eason
Friday 25/11/11 : 2nd XI v Bangor 2nd (Home) Won 2-0
"On Friday 25th November Instonians 2nd XI met Bangor 2nd XI at our home grounds of Shawsbridge. From the initial passback Bangor took charge of the game and pushed play straight up into our circle. We fought back and cleared the ball away moving it ball back up the field. Play was mainly in our half with Bangor applying pressure on our defence. A clear pass to Carole in the centre allowed an attack at an almost open goal. Unfortunately the ball went wide of the post. Not to be deterred, we were successful in our next attempt, playing to an advantage, with a lovely pass into the circle by Ali and pushed on by Carole to Rachel who knocked it into the back of the goal. Play returned to our half with some excellent clearances from Lynn, Kathy and Catherine. Both Lynn and Pippa did an excellent job in getting the ball back down the field by pushing forward with some excellent dribbling. Result at half time 1-0 to Instonians.
From the start of the second half Bangor were visibly determined to turn the game around and fought hard to get a goal in the bag. The pressure was really on our defence in this half and Nicola made some fantastic saves. It was hard to clear the ball away on occasions with so many players from both teams in our circle. In the final minutes we had a late opportunity on goal. With a minimal defence in front of us, Ali was awarded a free hit on the right wing. She took the ball cleanly into the circle, and gave an almighty hit straight into the back of the net. A fantastic goal. Bangor were very unlucky not to score themselves despite having so many opportunities.
This was a great boost for our team - getting our first win under our belts. I thought some of our newer team members played really well and confidence is growing with their skills. Well done girls and lets keep it up! Final score 2-0 to Instonians." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 19/11/11 : 2nd XI v Malone (Away) Lost 1-3
"On Saturday 19th November Instonians 2nd IX met Malone ladies at Pirrie Park, Belfast, for their return match. From the whistle we attacked with great gusto and immediately took play into their circle. Malone came straight back into the game and drove play back up to our half. The play remained even throughout the first half and Carole had a great opportunity at goal, which narrowly missed and skirted the left goal post. A good morale boost for the team to have a strong opportunity so early on in the match. Half-time result 0-0.
We were positive going into the second half but Malone found their determination and attacked early on scoring the first goal of the match. We came back at them and Gillian scored a cracking goal straight away. Malone’s strength always comes in the latter part of the game and they attacked our goal area relentlessly. Our fantastic goalie Abby prevented their attempts going in. At one stage Abby was on the floor and stopped a continued attack by using her whole body, hands and feet to keep the ball out. A true heart in the mouth moment for those watching from both teams. Their continued pressure gave them a second goal in the last 5 minutes. Errors in our circle caused several short corners to be given away in the dying moments and on the final whistle there was a short corner remaining this gave Malone their final goal - from a cracker shot at the top of the circle.
A disappointing result once more on what was a fairly evenly matched game. Malone have played together for years and are well established as a team which is evident in the way they play. This is an area we can work on by ensuring we have the same players out each week so confidence can grow in the positions and in each other. Final score 3-1 to Malone." match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 04/11/11 : 2nd XI v Larne 3rd (Home) Lost 0-5
"On Friday 4th November Instonians 2nd XI met Larne 3rd XI at our home pitch at Shawsbridge. It was a late start with a 20.30 passback. We began with confidence and lovely play from the midfield, passing up to Victoria who had a clear opportunity to score with only the opposition keeper in her way. Unfortunately the ball did not reach its target and we missed the chance to take an early lead. Things changed rapidly and Larne took control of the game scoring 3 goals in quick succession. Abby made some great saves but the repeated attack proved too much. Our play was good in the latter part of the first half and we slowly regained momentum as a team with some lovely passing up the field. Score at half time 3-0 to Larne.
We started the second half with a renewed confidence and were determined to turn the game around. We had moved some of the defenders to close down any further attacks. A further 2 goals were scored by Larne and in the remainder of the second half we regained our strength to put pressure on Larne. We had several opportunities within the circle but were unable to find the net. This seems to be an area we need to work on. We lose often get the ball to the circle and then miss our chances on goal. The team worked well together and we had some lovely play at times throughout the match. Our new members Catherine and Blathnaid fitted in well and their confidence grew as the game progressed. Final score 5-0 to Larne" match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 29/10/11 : 2nd XI v South Antrim (Away) Lost 0-7
"On Saturday 29th October, Instonians 2nd XI travelled to Laurelhill, Lisburn, to play South Antrim. We made a surge forward to the opposition's goals from the whistle. South Antrim came straight back at us and took the ball back into our half. Our defence struggled to clear the ball to safety and we gave away several short corners. The opposition continued a relentless attack and took full advantage of our errors scoring 4 goals in quick succession, all skillfully gained. Score at half-time was 4-0 to South Antrim.
At the start of the second half we once again took play straight into the Antrim half. Gillian, in centre forward position, struggled to get through their defence but there was lovely passing between Caitlin and Gillian to push forward. South Antrim quickly regained control and pushed the game back up to our goals. More of our mistakes gave away further short corners and 3 further goals. We had a few glimmers of hope when we were able to push forward in the last 10 minutes and managed to obtain a short corner. Unfortunately we were not able to convert the corner into a goal.
The South Antrim side are a new club with excellent skills and knowledge of the game. They played some superb hockey. I think they will move up the leagues rapidly. From our perspective we need to increase our confidence and believe in our abilities to compete with a stronger team. Some of our new girls did an excellent job with their marking and that, combined with their developing stick skills, will help to increase the confidence of our new team. Final Score 7-0 to South Antrim." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 15/10/11 : 2nd XI v Ballymena 4ths (Away) Drew 1-1
"On Saturday 15th October, Instonians 2nd XI travelled to Ballymena to play their 4th XI. It was a late start but we put pressure on the Ballymena side from the whistle. The result was that we scored the opening goal early. Ballymena fought back from the restart and scored to even up the scoreline following a collision with two of our defenders. We dominated play keeping the ball firmly in the opposition's half. Any attempts to return the ball to our end were cleared quickly and efficiently by our defence. Score at half-time 1-1.
The second half started with Ballymena coming out with a renewed determination and at some points our team lost some of the drive we had displayed in the first half. Ballymena attacked hard but our defence remained strong and cleared the balls away. Several short corners were gained on both sides but no further goals were scored. Instonians launched a relentless attack on the Ballymena goals in the dying minutes but all shots at goal narrowly missed the target. A good but disappointing result for a growing team. A win would have really boosted our confidence. Final score 1-1." match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 07/10/11 : 2nd XI v Portadown 3rds (Home) Lost 0-4
"On Friday 7th October, Instonians 2nd XI met with Portadown 3rd XI at our home ground of Shawsbridge. From the start a very young, fit Portadown side applied strong pressure and gained a goal in the early minutes of the first half. A switch of player positions was quickly implemented to beef up our defence. Portadown continued their attack and Abby made some amazing saves in goals. A further 2 goals were gained by Portadown in the first half. Half time score 3-0 to Portadown.
We rallied our defence and closed down the opposition attack by limiting their opportunities to score. A good clearance from the side line allowed Gillian to take the ball into their circle and have an attempt at goal. The ball hit the post and veered out of play. We were hugely disappointment not to pull back a goal. Play remained in our half for most of the remainder of the match with the odd opportunity for us to surge forward. Portadown managed to slip in one more goal. Our defending was far more organised in the second half.
As a team we need to concentrate on marking and stronger passes to each other. Confidence is growing and many of our new players are finding their feet. A great effort once again from such a new team. Final score 4-0 to Portadown." match comments by Carole Maslowski
Saturday 01/10/11 : 2nd XI v Bangor 2nds (Away) Drew 1-1
"Instonians 2nd XI travelled to a very rainy Bangor to play Bangor 2nd XI at Bangor Academy. The match started evenly with neither team dominating play but Bangor got a lucky break which resulted in the first goal of the match. The first half ended with the score as 1-0 to Bangor.
At the start of the second half Instonians took control of the game and surged forward with an immediate attack. Excellent play between midfield and forwards allowed Gillian to neatly score within minutes of the restart. Bangor had only 10 players for the second half and we took full advantage. We maintained the pressure and retained play in their half. With 5 short corners in quick succession we were very unfortunate not to gain a second goal.
There was some great play from our new members and it is clear to see their confidence has grown already since the first match. A huge well done to the team and I’m looking forward to the season ahead and hopefully a few wins under our belt." match comments by Carole Maslowski
Friday 23/09/11 : 2nd XI v Malone (Home) Lost 0-1
"On Friday 23rd September Instonians 2nd XI met Malone ladies at our home ground, Shawsbridge. We are a very new team this season with the majority of the team also new to the game of hockey. I was delighted to see a few returning players. From the whistle Malone dominated play and our new formation at the back did well to clear the initial attack. Our new goalie Abby had some outstanding saves. We fought back and managed to get play back up into the Malone half. Unfortunately our lack of attacking experience allowed the ball to be returned with a counter attack from Malone resulting in a goal. Half time result 1-0 to Malone.
In the second half we retained our defence and our new players did an excellent job to prevent any further goals despite an onslaught of attempts from the opposition. A good start to the season and a huge well done to the new team who’s confidence will continue to grow as the weeks go on. Final score 1-0 to Malone." Match comments by Carole Maslowski
